When We See You
Gallery Taxi, Bergen, Norway. November 2022.
When we see you is a collaborative art-making and writing project began by Jack O’Flynn in 2021. Taking cards from the Major Arcana of the Tarot de Marseille as a point of exploration, this project asks: what do we see when we look at the card that sits before us? Over the course of two years Jack playfully re-created imagery found in the Tarot de Marseille with artists Connie Hurley, Tamara Macarthur and Lisa Rytterlund, in a process of exchange and friendship. Texts were written in conjunction with the making of the cards and shared via the online blog, Whenweseeyou.com. Drawing on his work as an artist and yoga-teacher Jack sought to explore the cards from a somatic, intuitive and poetic lens. Searching through the imagery of the cards for the You: The parts of ourselves that are unseen, mysterious and beyond.
‘As a response to the lockdown of 2020 I began a postal collaboration with artist Connie Hurley. Both sharing an interest in Tarot, an idea emerged that we should make Tarot cards together. At the time I was researching and writing about the Tarot for my blog ‘when we see you’ and felt like approaching the cards from a more embodied, tactile way by drawing them. I asked Connie to make me a card with hand made paper, and to interpret the sides of the card in anyway she felt like, leaving a blank space in the middle for me to draw the final image. The resulting card is a playful interaction between two artists, seeing each-other, sharing a space in the mysterious world of a Tarot card. ´
